Thank you for your registration for the 2012 Tooth Tally Project. Please read this email carefully, there is lots of information in it. If you don’t understand or need help, please reply to this email and I’ll get you get going!
The Wiki
The Tooth Tally uses a password protected web site that all registered participants can view and edit. It is not accessible to the public to protect our students’ privacy. The wiki is used to record tally data and communicate with each other. Each group has a page to post their monthly tooth tallies, add photos and communicate with other classes in their group.
Existing WikiSpaces Members
According to my records, you already have a membership with WikiSpaces which you can use for this year’s tooth tally. I will send you an invitation to join the Tooth Tally wiki. After you confirm, you can find our wiki here: https://toothtally.wikispaces.com Important: Make sure to bookmark this site so you can find the wiki again easily.
The Tally
Your class has been assigned to Groups 1,2,3,4. Groups serve no function other than to keep the number of classes manageable. You are welcome to visit other group’s pages and even leave them a message if you like.
To get things started, please log onto the Wiki (https://toothtally.wikispaces.com). Click the link to 2012 and then your group name. This will open up the page where you will enter your tally numbers and share with others. Please check your name and class details and make a change if you want to.
Your first edit should be an introduction about your class (and you). Why don’t you upload a class photo or a special smile? Have a look at the 2009 pages to get the idea. Attached to this email is a tutorial on how to edit the wiki and a tutorial about optimising and adding pictures please read them first.
Remember, we’re counting twice:
1. the total number of teeth lost each month,
2. the number of children who do not lose a tooth each month. (So everyone in your class is included.)
On the last day of the month count the number of teeth lost and also the number of children who did not lose a tooth, then post the data on the wiki site. For our purposes, it doesn’t matter if this is not the total number of students in your class.
IWB Users
If you are an Interactive Whiteboard user (Smartboard or Promethean), you can downloaded the Notebook10 file. There are interactive pages in here to help keep count of the teeth. The file is ready made – you don’t need to create anything new – just use the resources and games in it. Download it here: http://www.toothtally.com/educators/educators.htm or https://toothtally.wikispaces.com/2012
You can now follow the Tooth Tally on Facebook and Twitter. If you are into social networking, why don’t you have a look? This isn’t necessary as part of the Tooth Tally Project, just for those who are interested.

Whether you use the IWB, create a pictograph or use tally marks, make sure your students have a way to count those missing teeth! Create a chart to keep track of your partners’ information, too. Use these figures to do comparisons, make graphs and do math problems. This “real” data can really engage your students’ interest so use it in lots of ways in your classroom! The Tooth Tally website has loads of ideas for using your tooth data and if you come up with any new ideas please be sure to add them to the wiki to share with others. If you create a great bulletin board display, be sure to post a picture of it on the wiki!
Please don’t hesitate to send me an email at any time or if you need help – I love to hear from you!
